What is IPL Therapy?
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy is a highly effective treatment designed to address pigmentation issues in the skin. It targets unwanted discoloration caused by sun damage, melasma, scars, broken capillaries, hyperpigmentation, and brown spots. IPL technology uses light energy to break down areas of pigment without harming surrounding tissues, gradually bringing the pigment to the surface, where it naturally flakes off, revealing clearer, more even-toned skin.
Additionally, IPL stimulates collagen production, which can improve skin texture, minimizing fine lines and reducing the appearance of acne scars. The treatment offers comprehensive skin rejuvenation by addressing both discoloration and redness.
Candidate Eligibility
IPL therapy is ideal for individuals with various pigmentation-related concerns, including:
- Rosacea (skin redness)
- Hyperpigmentation (vascular or pigmented lesions)
- Sunspots
- Uneven skin texture
- Scars, such as stretch marks
- Vascular lesions
The number of sessions required depends on the severity of the condition and the size of the treatment area. Typically, 2 to 6 sessions spaced about 4 weeks apart are recommended. During your consultation with Dr. Sweat, a personalized treatment plan will be developed to meet your specific skincare goals.

The IPL Treatment Process
Before the procedure, the treatment area is cleansed, and a cooling gel may be applied for comfort. Protective eyewear is provided to shield your eyes from the light. The IPL device emits multiple wavelengths of light, penetrating the skin to target pigmentation, redness, and other irregularities. This energy is absorbed by the pigmented areas, breaking them down while leaving the surrounding skin unaffected.
Each session lasts approximately 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the number and size of the areas being treated. After the procedure, most patients can return to their daily routines immediately, though minor redness or swelling may occur temporarily.
Benefits
of Intense Pulsed Light Therapy
IPL therapy offers a versatile, non-invasive solution to multiple skin concerns:
Post-Treatment Care and Results
To maximize results, patients should avoid unprotected sun exposure during and after IPL sessions. While IPL can reverse existing pigmentation and discoloration, maintenance treatments and consistent skincare are essential to prolong results. Dr. Sweat’s office recommends yearly follow-ups, particularly after periods of heightened sun exposure, to sustain your rejuvenated skin.
